Practicing as a PA in Arizona

Every PA in Arizona practices under one of two arrangements set by the Arizona Regulatory Board of Physician Assistants.

A supervision agreement is required for PAs with fewer than 8,000 clinical practice hours. It is a signed agreement with a physician, or with an employer that has a qualifying physician on staff, and it defines the PA's scope of practice.

Collaborative practice certification is available to PAs with 8,000 or more clinical hours, as certified by the board. It requires a designated collaborating physician or entity responsible for oversight, without a supervision agreement.

Alta is not a supervising or collaborating physician or entity. The agreement you practice under comes with you.

  • If you work for another employer, does your current contract allow clinical work elsewhere? Have your own counsel read it first.

Inquiries

Questions physician associates ask

Can I practice at Alta on my own?

Not without an agreement. In Arizona every PA practices under a supervision agreement or, with 8,000 or more clinical hours certified by the board, in collaborative practice with a designated physician or entity. Alta is neither, so the agreement you practice under comes with you.

Can my supervising or collaborating physician use Alta too?

Yes. Each provider holds a membership of their own, and hours are booked under the member who will be in the room.

Can I use Alta as the practice address for licensing and payers?

Alta is built to serve as a medical address. What it covers for your practice and your licensure is confirmed during residency intake.

Can I bring my own medical assistant?

Yes. The clinical team is yours or the practice's to hire and to run. Alta supplies the rooms and the house around them.

What if the practice needs a room full time?

The practice can move to a dedicated suite. It stays the practice's room and address, with the same house behind it.

Is any of the practice's revenue shared with Alta?

No. What the practice bills is its own in full. Alta charges for membership, the hours you book and any locker.

Can I start while I am still working elsewhere?

Only within the supervision or collaboration agreement you practice under, and only if your current contract allows outside clinical work. Confirm both first, and have your own counsel read any non-compete. Where they allow it, members book evenings and single days around another job.
